If you're serious about becoming more spiritually mature, spiritual disciplines (habits) will play an important part in your life. Here are a two reasons why this is important.
1) Jesus, the only perfect person ever to live, had spiritual habits. He prayed, read Scripture, worshiped, and practiced community. If he thought those things were important for himself, then they should be even more important for us.
2) Jesus tells us that staying connected to him is something we are to do actively. Abiding in Christ is not a passive activity (John 15:5). Spiritual disciplines (habits) help us maintain connection.
Like athletes who train themselves to exceed their physical limits, spiritual exercises enable us to do what we're unable to do on our own. As we develop these spiritual habits, we partner with God in our growth and transformation. Then we can grow in his grace and produce good fruit.
